Karyotype

Karyotype refers to the arrangement of chromosomes
in homologous pairs. They are arranged
and numbered according to a convention.
The basis for the arrangement is size of a
chromosome, position of the centromere, and
the chromosome-specific banding pattern. The
karyotype is characteristic for each species.
However, the term karyotype can also be applied
to an individual or to a single cell.
