DNA at the telomeres consists of G-rich tandem
sequences (5'-TTAGGG-3' in vertebrates, 5'-
TGTGGG-3' in yeast, 5'-TTGGGG-3' in protozoa).
The G-strand overhangs are important for
telomeric protection by formation of a duplex
loop
